A root canal treatment is typically recommended when the core of your tooth (also called the "pulp") is inflamed and/or infected. If the pulp is infected and left untreated, it can cause more severe and permanent issues, such as tooth loss, pain, or an abscess. Root canal treatment is a great way to help prevent the need for teeth extraction, dentures, or implants.
Although root canal treatments can relieve pain and issues that are deep in your teeth, daily brushing and flossing should be maintained to minimize the need for further treatment and the risk of severe conditions.
First, in order to perform the treatment, the damaged areas of the tooth are removed. After removal, the inside of the tooth is disinfected and filled with a rubber-like material. The pulp chamber is also filled with cotton and the opening is sealed with a temporary filling. The next time you return, a core buildup will replace the temporary filling and the treatment is finished with a filling or crown on your tooth.
